October 2, 2025Freedom Restored: Shikra Bird Freed After Unlawful Use as Bait
On September 27, 2025, the Forest Department presented two birds—a Shikra (Little Banded Goshawk) and a pigeon—before the Court of Judicial Magistrate-I Swabi, Syed Wahaj Ali Shah. The Shikra, a small bird of prey native to Asia and Africa, is often used by hunters as bait to trap falcons. Its eyes are partially stitched to limit flight, with a pouch attached to its claws as bait, leading to the capture of falcons attempting to seize it.
The court conducted legal proceedings in accordance with the law. The stitches on the Shikra’s eyes were carefully removed using scissors, restoring its vision in a moment of profound relief. When the bird was released and soared into the open sky, it was a deeply satisfying sight for all present.
